stop all the clocks

0

This is for cathelin, in memory of her best friend, Eric. This is one of my all-time favorite poems.

W. H. Auden

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

shoes

I’ve been sitting in classes noticing people’s shoes. Shoes are interesting to me because I think they can tell you a lot about the person. Do they slide off and on easily? Are they falling apart? Are they polished and shiny? Do they wear boots or Tevas or tennis shoes?

Even in the dead of winter with snow up to your kneecaps and the temperatures barely out of the single digits, there will always be that ultra-hip, ultra-cool guy who wears Tevas and shorts. He sprawls out in the chair as if it’s a bore to be there with the rest of us plebes (and it very well could be). He yawns frequently. You *know* he’s thinking about girls or skiing or beer or all three.

The girl with the long brown hair that is pulled back, thin wire-rimmed glasses perched upon her nose and tennis shoes with white socks and blue jeans that are just a shade off of everyone else’s sits with her pencil poised for note-taking. She’s usually the most brilliant person in the classroom and I’m constantly in awe.

There is the one guy who is usually over 6 feet and larger in body size (usually a *buff* guy) who wears all black with some heavy metal band name written in bright, deathly colors on his t-shirt. He typically wears the steel-toed black boots that are laced up. He rarely says anything and when he does, it’s insightful and amazingly brilliant…and very quiet.

There is always one girl who also wears the steel-toed boots but she’s so stylish that I want to be her. I want to pull it off the way that she does. But I can’t be 18 again and I’m not sure her style would look quite the same on my 38-year-old body. Casual but chic is the key.

Me…I can be found in anything from Birkenstock clogs to Tevas to steel-toed boots to classic high heels to mary janes to something funky.

I’m turning into a bona fide shoe slut.

Side note: Tevas were designed by Mark Thatcher here in my hometown and this is where their corporate headquarters are. Most people around town have at least one pair of Tevas.

I’ve decided to combine all of my blogs.  It’s too exhausting trying to keep up several different blogs simply “because.”

If you’re interested:  girl-inchoate.  Some of it is adult-oriented so be forewarned.  I have a web log there and a photoblog there.  I put up a new picture every day and try to write often.

If I don’t see you there, I will try to pop in on your blogs to see you occasionally.

Take care all of you.  You’ve been a great audience over the years.

I’ve been blogging steadily since 2001. I am currently copying those files over here so I can have all of my blogging entries in one place. I want to be able to go to one place to see it all and not have to enter 5 different blogs just to see what’s been going on in my life.

Please forgive me for recycling. I just would like my life compartmentalized in terms of my writing a bit more.
